At a ceremony held in the Grand Kremlin Palace, President Putin said Sri Lanka and Russia have long standing relations, and also stated that Russia is working to improve its relations with Sri Lanka in political, trade, economic and social frontiers. In his conversation with Russian President Putin, Ambassador Dr. Weerasinghe highlighted recent positive developments in bilateral and specially trade relations and expressed hope that this trend will continue.

Ambassador Dr. Weerasinghe is a holder of the ‘Order of Honor of the Russian Federation’ The 'Order of Honour' is a State Order of the Russian Federation established by Presidential Decree No. 442 of March 2, 1994 to recognise high achievements in government, economic, scientific, socio-cultural, public, sport and charitable activities.
