The Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is one of the most sacred and beautiful temples, of great historical significance in Sri Lanka. The chronicles, Dipavamsa and Mahavamsa record in detail, the story of the Buddha's visit to Kelaniya, during the eighth year after his Enlightenment. And how, following the expounding of the Dhamma by the Buddha, the Kelaniya Royal Temple was built by the Naga King Maniakkhika. The jeweled throne, the Buddha is supposed to have occupied while preaching, and relics of the Buddha's hair are said to be enshrined in the stupa, at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya. The ten incarnations of the Hindu God Vishnu, are also represented at this temple, as it is believed by some, that the Buddha himself is an incarnation of God Vishnu.
