The Annual Duruthu Perehara of Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya started yesterday, 7th January with the guidance of the Chief Incumbent Venerable Professor Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkhitha Thera and will continue until 9th January. As the Chairman of the "Dayaka Sabha" Dr. Saman Weerasinghe will be attending to this religious festival too.
The Sacred Kelaniya Temple plays historical significance due to the Buddh’a third visit to this religious premises. Sri Lanka’s Buddhist Calendar opens with Duruthu Perehara Festival at the sacred Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya.
Kelaniya Duruthu Perehara restarted in 1927 with the guidance of the Chief incumbent of the temple during that time. And since then this religious festival is one of the main religious event in the country..
