Dr. Saman Weerasinghe foundation sponsored the “Aloka Pooja” of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya for the 7th consecutive year to mark Vesak on April 29th in the presence of the Chief Incumbent of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, Ven. Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangarakitha Thera.
Lord Buddha visited the Kelaniya temple with five hundred other enlightened monks on the third visit which was the final visit of the Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka by an invitation from King Maniakkitha who was the King of the snake tribe. During his visit, the Lord Buddha preached to King Maniakkitha and his followers. The King constructed the Stupa of the Kelaniya Temple on that very place. The Mahawansa records that the original Stupa at Kelaniya enshrined a gem-studded throne on which the Buddha sat and preached.
