Gold ornaments to beautify the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, were offered by the Dr.Saman Weerasinghe Foundation on Vesak Poya Day, observed on May 10,2017 (yesterday). This is the fifth consecutive year that the Foundation had been involved in re-decorating the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, reckoned as the oldest surviving historical tree in the world.
The sacred tree was brought to Sri Lanka by Theri Sangamitta, daughter of Emperor Asoka and planted in the Mahameghavana Park at Anuradhapura in 249 BC by King Devanampiyatissa. It is said to be the southern branch of the Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi at Buddha Gaya in India, under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment.
